Several years ago I found a sheet of paper tucked in my moms bible  listing the name of my Great Grandparents, John Hildinger and Sarah Margaret Clark.  That list sent me on a journey that would go back to 16th Century Germany.  With the help of a distant relative residing in Alabama, and a very nice lady in California, I was able to contact  a Hildinger relative who lives in Germany. Erich has spent a great deal of time researching the Hildinger's, and without is help I would have not been able to take the Hildinger Line as far back as I have. The following is the Hildinger Story.

Tobias Gottlob Hildinger, my Great Great Great Grandfather was born 3 September 1830 in Weil im dorf, Württemberg, Germany, and was the son of Johann Hildinger and Maria Magdalena Dachtler.  (today, Weilimdorf is what we consider a "suburb" of Stuttgart, Germany)

On January 30, 1854 in the district of Leonburg, Tobias made application to leave Weil im dorf for the United States.  He was granted permission on 4th of February 1854. Tobias traveled to London, where he boarded the sailing ship "Margaret Evans" arriving in New York Harbor April 19, 1854. at age 24. Tobias's name was changed to Thomas probably upon arrival and going through immigration.  It is unclear how long he actually stayed in New York before moving to Hocking County Ohio, where he married Caroline Bloom, daughter of Martin Blum and Jacobina Schein, on January 1, 1857. Caroline and Thomas made their residence in Laurel Township, Hocking County Ohio.  Thomas was a carpenter and farmer by trade.  He and Caroline gave birth 4 children while in Laurel Township, Franklin, Mary Elizabeth, John and Martin Thomas.

In 1866 Thomas with his wife and children moved to Thorn creek Township, Whitley County Indiana, and purchased property on April 24, 1866.  He purchased the W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section 17, township 32 Range 9  80 acres.  Three more children were born in Thorn Creek, Andrew, George and Missouri (deceased).  Thomas died at the age of 39, in Whitley County as a result of a logging accident.  Caroline sold the homestead on December 29, 1870 and purchased the following items:  Jack Plane, 1 kettle, 20 bushels of wheat, beets and cabbage, one wagon breaking plane, 25 shocks of corn and one cow.

On December 17, 1871, on year after the death of Thomas, Caroline married John Freudiger, a native of Switzerland. By wagon, Caroline and John moved their family to Elm Grove Township, Labette County Kansas.

Caroline gave birth to 2 children Charles born in 1872 and Clara born in 1875.  When  Mr. Freudiger died is unknown, but Caroline remained in Kansas until the opening of the Cherokee Strip.  In 1893 the "Cherokee Strip" was opened for homesteading, and two of her sons, John and George, staked a claim on a site which is now known as Nash, Grant Co., OK.  In 1894, Caroline and her family moved to Prairie Township, Grant Co., OK and took residence in a "Soddy" until a permanent home could be built.  Caroline remained in Nash the until her death on November 12, 1911.
