~”PEANUTS”~

Lois Caywood Guffy

Peanuts, Peanuts...Get Your "Hot" Peanuts Here!!

Mama and daddy did not plant peanuts as a rule, but I remember a couple of years that they did. I remember them shelling the peanuts to plant and how badly I would have loved to have eaten them right there. They soaked them for a while before planting them. Our sandy loam soil was great for peanuts. I was not there when they were planted, but remember sneaking out to pull a vine now and then before they were ripe and  munched on the not very ripe nuts. A few times they were very immature and we ate the shell and all. Mama always warned us that raw peanuts would give us stomach aches. Maybe that was a ploy? We never did get a tummy ache and we did eat plenty. Mama always let the peanuts dry for a few days before she let us eat the tasty morsels.

One year we ate some at Grandpa Caywoods so one evening as we crossed his pasture on the way home from school, we bragged about Grandpa's peanuts to our neighbor kids. Of course, they wanted some. We stopped at Grandpa's house and found him not home, so we dug into the big barrel for a hand full anyway, but the neighbor kids were greedy and took many. I do remember feeling guilty about us doing this, but after all, he was our dear old grandpa and he surely would not care. Wrong... He did care! I assume mostly because we took so many. Grandpa Caywood reported our deed to mama. Mama was livid and reprimanded us severely over and over. Daddy just tried not to smile.
